Understanding Power Transmission Chains

Power transmission chains consist of two or more interconnected mechanical components used to transmit power or materials from one location to another. The type of chain required depends on the application, operating environment, and the physical stresses and demands placed on the system.

Roller Chain: The Most Recognized Power Transmission Chain

A roller chain is the most common and easily recognizable type of chain, often seen in applications like bicycle chains. Roller chains are classified by their pitch and roller type, with standard sizes such as 40, 60, and 80 Chain. The pitch of a chain is determined by the first number in its designation and is measured in eighths of an inch. For example:

  • 30 Chain has a pitch of 3/8 inch (0.375”)

  • 80 Chain has a pitch of 8/8 inch (1.000”)

The second number indicates the roller type:

  • 0 = Standard construction with a roller

  • 1 = Lightweight construction

  • 2 = Oversize roller

  • 5 = Rollerless

Heavy Series Roller Chain

The heavy series roller chain features sidebars that are equivalent to the next size larger chain, along with contoured side plates. These enhancements provide added fatigue resistance, making them suitable for high-stress applications.

Steel Pintle Chain

Steel pintle chains are ideal for various applications, such as salt, sand, and fertilizer spreaders, hay handling, and similar conveying systems. Their open barrel construction reduces pin surface contact within the barrel, preventing seizing due to corrosion. This design also minimizes material build-up in the barrel and sprocket root, ensuring smoother operation and extended chain life.

Engineered Class Chain

Engineered class chains are characterized by large pitch sizes, higher safety factors, and greater clearances. These chains may feature specialized attachments, materials, seals, or plating tailored to specific applications and environments. They are rated by workload and strength, and most fall into the following categories:

  • Drive Chain

  • Roller Conveyor Chain

  • Bushed Chain

  • Welded Chain

  • Bar and Pin Chain

  • Barloop Chain

  • Detachable Link Chain

  • Plastic Engineering Chain
