The maintenance steps of chain are basically divided into two steps: cleaning and oiling.
I. Cleaning
If the chain has a lot of sludge, you should use a brush (or an old toothbrush) and soapy water (warm soapy water is better) to clean the sludge, and then rinse it with clean water, just like brushing shoes and washing dishes, and after washing, remember to dry the chain with a dry cloth.
If the chain is not muddy, you can take it off, find a container, fill it with cleaning agent, put it into the chain and shake it to make it clean, if your chain has a magic buckle, then congratulations, you will finish this maintenance more easily than others.
If you don't want to remove the chain, you can use the chain washer, it is simple and convenient, but note that when cleaning, you must avoid the cleaning solution to pollute the floor, some cleaning solutions are hard to clean.
It is better not to use highly aggressive rust remover, it will erode the chain and make it very fragile and easy to break the chain.
Do not use high pressure water column to remove the sludge on the body, this method is very efficient, but it may force the sewage into the bearing, which will cause damage to the bearing.
II. Oiling
Don't use chain oil randomly, you can choose different chain oil according to different riding environment.
In a humid environment, you should use oil with high viscosity, because high viscosity is easier to stick to the chain surface to form a protective film; in a dry and dusty environment, you should use oil with lower viscosity, so the chain will not be easily covered with dust and dirt. And a good lubricant will feel like water penetrating the chain when it is used, but it will become sticky or dry after some time.
Make sure the chain is dry before oiling, otherwise oil and water will mix together and reduce the effectiveness of the chain oil.
If you are only doing a minor maintenance, you can only oil the critical parts of the chain. If it is a big maintenance, every piece of the chain should be oiled, so you should drip oil to both sides of the chain pins one by one when oiling.
It is not better to apply more oil than necessary. Too much oil will attract dust and dirt and increase the wear of the chain. To control the amount of oiling, use a syringe and wait for a few minutes after oiling to let the oil penetrate into the chain and then rotate the drive system several times. If you are using spray can type lubricating oil, remember to wipe off the excess chain oil with a dry rag after oiling.
