According to the structure, it can be divided into roller chain and tooth chain, among which roller chain is the most widely used. The structure of the roller chain is shown in the figure. It is composed of inner chain plate 1, outer chain plate 2, pin shaft 3, sleeve 4 and roller 5. The inner chain plate and sleeve, outer chain plate and pin shaft are respectively connected by interference fit, which is called inner and outer chain joints. The gap fit between roller and sleeve, sleeve and pin shaft is the question. When the inner and outer chain plates are relatively deflected, the sleeve can rotate freely around the pin axis. The roller is looped on the sleeve. When working, the roller rolls along the sprocket tooth profile, which can reduce the wear of the gear teeth. The main wear of chain occurs on the contact surface of pin and sleeve. Therefore, there should be a little clearance between inner and outer chain plates so that lubricant can penetrate into the friction surface. Chain plate is generally made into "8" shape, so that its various transverse sections have nearly equal tensile strength, but also reduce the chain mass and inertia force in motion.
Each part of the chain is made of carbon steel or alloy steel and is heat treated to improve its strength, wear resistance and impact resistance. Roller chains can be made into single-row chains and multi-row chains. When transmitting high power, double-row chains or multi-row chains can be used. The bearing capacity of multi-row chains is proportional to the number of rows. However, due to the influence of accuracy, the load borne by parallel chains is not uniform, so the number of rows should not be too large.
Roller chain has been standardized. China's chain standard GB 1.243.1-83 divides it into two series A and B, commonly used is A series. Its main parameters are listed in the table below. The chain number in the table is identical with the corresponding international chain number. Its pitch value is the chain number multiplied by 25.4/16mm. The basic parameters of roller chain are pitch p, roller outer diameter d1, etc. pitch P is the main parameter of roller chain. The larger the pitch is, the larger the size of each part of the chain is, and the greater the power can be transmitted.
The length of the chain is expressed by the number of links Lp. The number of links should be even, so as to facilitate the connection of the inner and outer links when the chain joints. The open pin or spring locking plate can be used at the joints. If the link is odd, the transition link should be used at the joint. When the chain is loaded, the transition link not only bears tension, but also bears additional bending load, which should be avoided as far as possible.
