Classification of chains by use

According to different uses, chains can be divided into lifting chains, traction chains and transmission chains. Lifting chain is mainly used to lift heavy objects in lifting machinery, its working speed is less than 0.25m/s; traction chain is mainly used to move heavy objects in chain conveyor, its working speed is less than 4m/s; transmission chain is used to transfer motion and power in general machinery, usually working speed is less than 15m/s.


There are two kinds of transmission chain: tooth chain and roller chain. Tooth chains are driven by the meshing of chains and sprockets with specific tooth shapes, as shown in Figure 9-2. Tooth chain drive is smooth and has little noise, so it is also called silent chain drive. The allowable working speed of the gear chain can reach 40m/s, but the manufacturing cost is high and the weight is heavy, so it is mostly used in high-speed or high-precision situations.


The main chains used in power transmission are sleeve roller chains and tooth chains. The sleeve roller chain consists of inner chain plate, outer chain plate, sleeve, pin shaft and roller. The outer chain plate is fixed on the pin axis and the inner chain plate is fixed on the sleeve. The roller and sleeve and the sleeve and pin axis can rotate relatively. Therefore, the meshing between the chain and the sprocket is mainly rolling friction. Sleeve roller chain can be used in single row and multi-row, and multi-row and multi-column can transmit larger power. Sleeve roller chain is lighter in weight, longer in life and lower in cost than tooth chain. It is widely used in power transmission.


Tooth chain is composed of several pairs of chains with 60 degrees of working face assembled by pins. The working face of the chain meshes with the sprocket. In order to prevent the chain from falling off from the sprocket when it is working, the chain is equipped with an inner guide or an outer guide. When meshing, the guide vane is embedded with the corresponding guide groove on the sprocket (Fig. 1). Tooth chain drive is smooth and has little noise, so it is also known as silent chain. It is often used in high-speed transmission. The tooth profile of sleeve roller chain and tooth sprocket should ensure that the chain can enter or exit meshing freely with energy saving. The impact is small when meshing, and the contact is good when meshing.
